![]() That’s not to say that Under Pale Moon quite lives up to the peaks of its forebears. It’s almost as if I put my desire for more flamboyant keys in black metal on a Vision Board and sent it out into the Universe, and the Universe granted my wish with Ringarë. In which case I can only hope that Under Pale Moon is a sign of a shifting tide, because I have been sitting around craving that good old ’96 synth atmosphere for the better part of the last year. Now we welcome the most liberal abuse of synths in our black metal because black metal has been too serious and too pure and too synthless for far too long. Now, with nostalgia gnawing on our heels like the rabid hounds of nostalgia, not so much. In ’96, it was definitely possible for a band of this ilk to overdo it on the synths. Did that sentence give you chills? No? What the fuck were you listening to in ’96 - Chumbawamba? Anyway, Under Pale Moon‘s inexplicable omission of definite or indefinite articles is balanced out by a very explicable and amazing atmosphere, which is created by the keyboards. ![]() Somewhere between the dark castles of Dimmu Borgir‘s Stormblåst, the mists of …and Oceans‘ Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts, and the ancient lore of Emperor’s Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk lies Ringarë’s debut record, Under Pale Moon. Chaos Moon is relevant to Skáphe, and Skáphe rules, but Skáphe is not even remotely related to the traffic of old school symphonic black metal (OSSBM), so you decide, I guess. Is this bit of information relevant? I don’t know. If any sense is to be made of the promotional material, Ringarë contains former members of Chaos Moon. The band with that name that I don’t know quite how to pronounce is one of those old projects (2004) that, for unspecified reasons, never saw the light of day. What am I supposed to be writing about? Oh yeah, Ringarë. Even Emperor was doing it - and Emperor is seriously righteously inarguably eternally tr00 black fvcking metal, okay? (Or at least they were back in ’96(66(<-see what I did there?)). In 1996, black metal of the symphonic persuasion was not yet a joke. ![]() Why was 1996 a better time? If I were to list the reasons, I would never run out of them, and you’d be reading forever. Is it Throwback Thursday yet? Why do I ask? Because today we’re going back to a better time perhaps the best of times: 199fucking6. ![]() ![]() Instead of listing different ping times, it actually displays a little colored meter. "The menu screen is similar to the way the PC version does it where it lists different servers or different games you can join," Hawkins explained, "but we've changed some of the information on that screen. The developers are currently tweaking the game's interface to make picking a game server as user friendly as possible. ![]() "It'll allow users to answer the question: Which type of gamer is the ultimate online fragmaster-PC or Dreamcast players?" DC gamers need not fear losing their competitive edge because they're stuck with awkward joypad-only control Sega is shipping the DC mouse in time for the game's release.īut Internet deathmatching is Qlll's main draw, and the DC version will let up to 16 players duke it out online. "This is especially interesting because it's the first time PC and console users will be able to play head-to-head online in real-time action," Qlll Arena senior producer Scott Hawkins told us. PC users will just need to download a patch and play on special servers that are running with the Dreamcast version's maps. And despite some initial concern from developer Raster Productions that it couldn't be done, Qlll Arena will support deathmatching between owners of the DC and PC version. Qlll Arena is meant to be played over the Internet, against 15 human opponents. But damnit, man-this is one of the first full-blown network games optimized for SegaNet (which also launches in September). We promise we won't point and laugh at you (although we can't make the same guarantee for Hsu and Chan). Oh, you can play Quake III Arena with three buddies on one TV in split-screen mode. When the bombast of rockets explode around you, you’ll come to appreciate the quality of this sound. Once again, although they aren’t much to write home about, Quake III Arena’s sounds are a near perfect replica of those from the PC game. Sadly, this element is missing from Quake III Arena. Based on the concept that distant items don’t need to be given as much detail, this technique can greatly reduce the strain on the console, and greatly improve the games performance. The only flaw in the design of Quake III Arena’s visuals is the lack of real Level of Detail programming. With an almost uncanny sense of what weaponsfire should look like, anyone who lights up their target with a stream of machine gun fire won’t be disappointed. ![]() Id Software hasn’t skimped on the lighting and special effects either. Colorful weaponry effects and luscious textures make each arena seem more an art show than a game, with amazing scenery and bizarre architecture. A slightly lower grade than the PC version, they are nonetheless still very impressive. Graphicsīy far, the graphics for Quake III Arena are its strongest point. ![]() Of course, those same ancient beings that brought you to the arena also resurrect you after each death to prolong their amusement. Essentially a one-on-one deathmatch, you win by collecting frags, which are earned after killing your opponent. The game itself revolves around moving throughout a level, bearing any number of nasty weapons, while collecting the firepower, ammunition, items, and armor necessary to deal death to your opponent. The analog stick is used to control aiming, and movement and fire control are easily handled with the thumb and forefinger buttons. However, with what little they’ve been given, Id Software has made lemonade out of lemons, using the Dreamcast controller to its full capability. When it comes down to it, the movement and combat features of a controller, even one as advanced as the Dreamcast’s, pales in comparison to the control and utility provided with a mouse and keyboard. Gameplay is the first and foremost problem facing any console based first person shooter. ![]() ![]() The Live View tab of the app allows you to view one or multiple cameras in a variety of layouts. You can also find an infrared motion sensor on each camera, which triggers motion recording and notifications. This protects the video/power cable so it's harder to tamper with. It's a good idea to secure the cables along the top of a wall, and you can buy a cable run or cord cover to conceal them if you don't want to stress about hiding them (though it will be pricey if you do 60 feet for each camera). But having multiple cameras does make up the shortfall a little.Įach camera comes with a 60-foot video/power cable, which is long enough to reach most areas of an average-sized home-provided the DVR is in a central location. Although this is wider than you might see on other wired security cameras, it's narrower than the 130º average on most wireless cameras. We're not big fans of the cameras' narrow field of view (80º), which limits how much they can see. There are also bright spotlights for color night vision. This type of night vision is more effective than most Wi-Fi security cameras, which illuminate about 25 feet on average. ![]() Each camera comes equipped with powerful infrared LEDs that give it up to 100 feet of night vision range. The four DP2 cameras in the Night Owl system are weatherproof, so you can use them indoors or outdoors. Still, the lag was less apparent compared to a wireless camera like the Arlo Pro 4, probably because there's no Wi-Fi involved on the sending end. When you watch a livestream on the mobile app, you can expect a short lag depending on your internet speed. Still, renters in apartments (like the small apartment where we tested) might see a little motion blurring close to the camera with people walking directly in front of it. If you view the video on a monitor connected to the DVR, it looks crisp without any noticeable motion blur at a distance. Compared to wireless cameras like the Ring Stick Up Cam and Wyze Cam Outdoor, the quality doesn't hold up considering those are easier to install. With Night Owl in particular, we found the color wasn't great in dim rooms and just decent in bright spaces. (We didn't test this, but it's true for most wired surveillance systems.) In our case, the included cameras topped out at 1080p, which is standard for security cameras these days. ![]() Still, we suspect it supports a variety of wired add-on cameras with lower resolutions as well. ![]() The DVR supports recording resolutions up to 1080p. Video quality is a tricky subject when dealing with DVRs like the one Night Owl uses. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kung Pao beef is typically prepared with celery and peanuts, then served with jasmine rice. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a simpler dish, then Kung Pao might be your best bet. The accompaniments of steamed or fried rice and vegetables bring out the dish’s flavors while complementing it perfectly. If you’re looking for a more complex flavor profile, then choosing Hunan beef might be the better option. This makes a difference, both in terms of presentation and overall flavor. Since it often contains peanuts, it is excellent as a single-dish option, so you don’t actually need anything to accompany it. Regarding Kung Pao beef, it can also be served over fried rice in a stir-fry style. Hunan beef is a very hot dish, so it is most often served over steamed or fried white or brown rice or thick noodles. Serving style is a slight distinction between Hunan beef and Kung Pao beef. But in either case, these dishes definitely pack a punch! Serving Style On the other hand, Hunan beef tends to focus more on bold flavors like garlic and scallions. But here’s the catch: Each restaurant can season the ingredients differently, so what you get isn’t always what you expect!įans of Kung Pao beef will tell you that this dish is all about balance: The chilies bring the heat, but they’re complemented by the sweetness of the vegetables and the saltiness of the peanuts. It also tends to be spicier than its Hunan counterpart. ![]() While Kung Pao beef is similar in terms of color, it has a much thinner sauce that usually has some peanut flavor to it. The sauce is thick, and the heat level can range anywhere from mild to extremely spicy, depending on how it’s prepared. It has that characteristic spicy heat that’s associated with Sichuan cuisine, along with hints of sweetness from garlic or scallions. The Hunan version of this dish typically features a darker reddish-brown color as it’s cooked with more spices and chilis than its counterpart, making it slightly spicier than Kung Pao beef. Still, some versions do not contain nuts. Its most defining characteristic is its crunchiness due to peanuts or cashews added during cooking. Kung Pao beef is often cooked in a bright red sauce with a sweet chili flavor. The beef is stir-fried at high heat with chili peppers but is almost always served with nutty elements like peanuts or cashews to balance the flavors. Kung Pao beef also uses ginger and garlic for flavor, but its marinade uses various ingredients like cornstarch, sugar, and Chinkiang vinegar. The beef is stir-fried at high heat with chili peppers and other vegetables like diced celery or carrots for added crunch. However, when it comes to flavor, that’s where their differences start.įor Hunan beef, the marinade usually consists of soy sauce, Shaoxing cooking wine, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, ginger, and garlic. The main similarity between the two is that both feature tender slices of beef as the star ingredient. When it comes to the ingredients and preparation of Hunan beef and Kung Pao beef, there are both similarities and differences. Kung Pao Chicken: Differences & Which Is Better? Ingredients and Preparation Join me as we explore the fascinating characteristics of these two delicious Chinese dishes. I’ll break down the differences between my two beloved Chinese beef-based meals and talk about their ingredients and preparation styles, how they look and taste different, the way they’re served, their popularity, similarities with other dishes, and even which one is better! ![]() If you’re looking for a tasty new dish to try or just curious about the flavors of each one, this article is for you. While both Hunan and Kung Pao beef dishes are delicious, there is no single answer regarding which one is better. Ultimately, it’s up to your individual preference which beef dish you prefer – both offer their own unique flavor and texture. Hunan beef is usually served as part of a multi-course meal or stir-fried plate with veggies or side dishes, whereas Kung Pao typically stands alone. Hunan beef is made with a sweet and spicy sauce and served with a crunchy top, while Kung Pao beef is made with a sweet, sour, and spicy sauce and a sprinkle of peanuts. So, what is the difference between Hunan and Kung Pao beef? Both stir-fried meals originated in China and have become popular worldwide – but people often wonder what makes them different. It doesn’t feature any optical zoom or image shifting either, so for most people getting an image on a screen or wall will just involve plonking it on a desk, adjusting the focus ring around the lens, connecting a source and maybe using the provided keystone adjustment to get the edges of the image perpendicular.ĭon’t forget that the built-in audio will negate the need to find an external audio source. And the K137 hits this target nicely.įor a start, like most LED-lit projectors, it fires up and shuts down instantly there’s no need to wait while it warms up and down. If it turns out to genuinely be as multipurpose as it sounds on paper, its £400 price point will start to look pretty reasonable.Ĭonvenience-based projectors like the K137 obviously need to be easy and quick to get up and running. Up to that point they should pump out between 560 and 700 ANSI lumens of brightness depending on which lamp mode you’re using – figures which are again strikingly high for an ultra-portable machine.Ĭolour should also stay reasonably true throughout the life of the projector thanks to Acer’s ColorSafe II system, which adjusts the picture settings to compensate for any colour decay over prolonged use.įrom these specs it’s no surprise to find Acer’s marketing for the K137 talking about it being a gaming and video projector despite its business-friendly Microsoft Office parsing. Once they die that’s basically the end of the projector’s life. Or to put it another way, the K137’s bulbs won’t ever need to be changed. Its DLP engine is illuminated by LEDs with a claimed lifespan of between 20,000 and 30,000 hours (depending on which lamp mode you use). Its native resolution of 1280×800 ticks both the HD Ready and widescreen (albeit 16:10 rather than the usual 16:9 aspect ratio) boxes, while its claimed contrast ratio of 10,000:1 is crazily high for an ultra-portable projector. The impressive first impressions continue with ithe K137’s picture specifications. The K137 is also DLNA-compliant, meaning that you can stream photos, music or video from Android/iOS/Windows smartphones, tablets and notebooks via an optional USB adapter. There are plenty of options for hooking up your sources, including an HDMI port with video, data and MHL (mobile phone) playback support type A USB and micro SD slots for direct playback of any Microsoft Office documents (ie Word, Excel and Powerpoint) as well as PDF files and even a Universal i/o port. With projectors like the K137 you just want to be able to take them out of a cupboard or pocket, plonk them down, hook up your source and immediately enjoy a full AV experience. But if you are you’ve clearly never tried using a small projector in either a business or casual home environment, where the last thing you want to have to do is try and find an external audio solution to provide the sonic accompaniment to your flashy Powerpoint presentation, corporate video, sports event or home movie. You might be wondering why sound matters on a device as focussed on visuals as a projector. But sound quality isn’t just about power it’s also about how that power is used, and in this respect the K137’s uniquely audio focussed design is very promising. We guess 6W doesn’t sound all that much on paper when you think that TVs often talk in terms of 20W and more these days. ![]() There’s even SRS Wow audio processing onboard, designed to deliver a wider soundstage and more dynamic, open performance from the speakers. Plus there’s a very good reason for the grilled part of the bodywork beyond mere aesthetic fanciness, namely that it’s the cover for a ‘360-degree’ audio system funnelling a 2 x 3W stereo speaker system out with much more room to breathe than you’d normally get from a small projector. It’s a very attractive design (it picked up a coveted iF product design award), and the build quality feels decent too – despite the fact that its 1.6in x 7.4in x 4.6in bodywork weighs just 1.1 pounds. Except, of course, for the little recessed projection lens on the right side of the front edge. With its rounded corners and distinctive combination of gloss white panels and light silver grille it looks more like a mini hovercraft than a projector. The K137 is a true one-off on the design front. The K137 is an ultra-small ‘travel’ projector that uses DLP technology and offers such surprisingly strong features as a 1280×800 native resolution, 3D playback, a built-in USB card reader, and most startlingly of all for a ‘pocket’ projector, a sound system that actually sounds decent rather than the sonic equivalent of two cans and a piece of string. ![]() ![]() ![]() On target has my appreciation and thanks for making my boys first gun shop experience a superb one, they were on a high the rest of the day.
